Trick or Treat Mail Art

I created this piece of mail art for The Three Muses Challenge-Circles and Squares. I had a blast doing it so I have decided to work on a couple more. Which got me to thinking how much fun it would be to exchange mail art with other artists.

Is anyone interested in doing that with me?
I figure it would build our art collections and as an added benefit we could be helping out the Postal Service employees too.

The Last Page Spreads in my Practical Magic Party Art Book

I've finally have finished my Art Book party favor for the Frosted Petunia's 2nd Annual Practical Magic Blog Party.
Sandi  at Victorian Gypsy has won the book and I'll be sending it off  in the mail today.
I had a lot of fun making this book and I also learned some ancient alchemy and botanical history.

It proved hard for me to part with this book, I'm thinking that I'll have to create one for myself.

If anyone is interested I do make Altered Art books on commission.

The Battle for the Black Petunias

This Summer I planted Black Magic Petunias and Orange Marigolds in my hanging flower boxes. My Studio is located in the basement of our home.  We have these lovely full size windows with big window wells that let in wonderful light.  But as window wells go,  wooden walls and pebbled bottoms ,they're not all that inspiring to look at.
To help remedy the situation I located some great looking black metal window boxes, hung them at the top of the wells and planted my flowers. I love looking out and up at them when I'm in my Studio working on my art.  Outside the boxes are at ground level.
I  also planted along with my flowers some white dusty miller foliage and thought by Fall they were going to look marvelous.
I was working on my small Kitchen herb garden at the same time. Things were nicely growing, I was envisioning lush looking plants and looking forward to eventually harvesting all my herbs.
Seems the neighborhood bunnies were waiting for me to finish my gardening, so they could have a convenient drop in eating establishment.
I'd come out to find half of my herbs eaten away.  I would cuss at first under my breath later it became out right screams of frustration  then  I'd replant , sprinkle pepper, garlic and any other natural rabbit repellent I could find.    This only moved them to eat the petunias, sample the marigolds ( which they didn't like but still kept nipping the flowers off!) and the dusty millers.
I ended up repotting my herbs in large containers, putting small wire fencing cages around some of the herbs and my small mini rose bush and digging up the few remaining petunias and planting them in a pot and setting the pot on my front porch.
Then out came my Scarecrow with his Crow buddy and they are keeping an eye out for any marauders. So far they are helping me win a small victory in the Battle for the Black Petunias.

Thoughts and Art Projects on this Rainy October Thursday

Working on my Practical Magic Altered Art Book party favor has taken longer than I wanted or anticipated. I've discovered that some days the art spreads seem to create themselves and other days they need to be labored over  And I do not like it when that happens.
I've got one more page spread to complete the book and the inside back cover. There are several blank end papers and I've decided to keep them that way so there will be a place for the lucky winner to write their own thoughts.
I'll be drawing the name of the winner tonight at 7 pm eastern time. If you want your name in the drawing please let me know by leaving me a comment That yes, please add your name to the drawing.

I've had a great time going around to all the participating blogs and seeing what they had to share.

As far as thoughts on a rainy October after noon, I've been reading a lot lately on the discovery of the Divine Feminine as written by Sue Monk Kidd.    Her books Traveling with Pomegranates and the Dance of the Dissident Daughter have really moved me.
I can count on one hand the books that I have read in my life that have so profoundly spoken to my soul because they seem to have been written especially for and about my personal life and experiences. These books effected me to the point that while reading them I have cried and have had to put them down and think about what I have just read  so that I can come to  grips with the soul stripping awakening that they have  lead me to.
Have you ever encountered a book or books that have had the same effect on you?

Wednesday the 5th of October

Yesterday I worked on a couple of art projects. I did the first half of a page spread in my altered art book, Homes and Gardens. The Three Muses blog has a new challenge ever Wednesday. This week was Bottles.
I had originally thought to do a spread featuring herbs and a little old Witch and have small bottles attached to the edge of the paper that would be filled with different herbs. After sorting through my bits and pieces I discovered I didn't have enough bottles, so my muse took me in another direction and Matilda offers potions and spirits. I'm finishing the other side of the spread using a picture of the Greenhouse from the movie Practical Magic.

Speaking of Practical Magic, I'm still creating my Altered Book for the past Party. I am working on Gilly's part and I thought to do my version of the page from the original Movie Spell book which has the spell they used to bring back Jimmy.  You can find  a photo of the original on the October Farm blog.
While creating this page which required a magnifying lens to help me decipher the words, I got intrigued about the ingredients. I began to look them up and what an education.
Who ever created the original page was very knowledgeable. Every ingredient was founded in ancient alchemy and it all deals with good health in some way or another.
My goal is to have the book done by this coming Saturday so I can do the Giveaway.

Tuesday, October the 4th-Some Halloween Art

I made a couple of years ago a number of wool and felt Halloween Jack O'Lantern purses. These little purse make great gifts for little and big girls.
I like to hang mine on the front closet door knob and either fill it with Fall foliage or Halloween candy.

I've also completed another Halloween Art Tag.

Autumn Fires by Robert Louis Stevenson

  In other gardens
 And all up the vale,
From the Autumn bonfires
See the smoke trail!
Pleasant summer over
And all the summer flowers;

The red fire blazes,
The gray smoke towers.

Sing a song of seasons!
Something bright in all!
Flowers in the summer,
Fires in the fall.

Countdown to Hallowe'en-October 1st, Saturday,

Danni over at The Whimsical Cottage has proposed a countdown to  Hallowe'en. She suggests we do something Autumnal or Halloweeny  every day til the Big Finish on October 31st.
I've posted her button so you may go and see others who are preparing for the celebration.

I personally pulled out my notebooks, yes, I have at this point two Halloween/Fall notebooks that I have filled with Halloween History, Collecting, Decorating, Cooking, Party Ideas and Art/Craft ideas.

I have been rummaging in the basement pulling out my boxes of Halloween items and am having the best time opening them and oohing over my collection. I add new things every year ,so it feels like Christmas!
Let the decorating begin!!
